Abstraction: Freedom from representational qualities in art
The first painting I remember making was an abstract. I was four years old and called it Archway. My grandmother loved it so much that she had it professionally framed, and it hung in her living room until she passed away in her late nineties. Looking back, perhaps abstract painting found me before I found it.
Working on wood, canvas or paper with oils, acrylics, enamel, oil pastels, graphite and silver leaf, abstraction allows me to return to the purest part of my creative process. Rather than beginning with an idea, I begin with a feeling. Colour, texture and form emerge intuitively as I respond to an inner dialogue that quietly guides each decision—this belongs here, more light, less, enough. I have learned to trust that voice.
Creating an abstract painting feels much like a dance: an intuitive conversation between instinct and material. Through the process, I distil emotion to its essence, stripping away narrative and explanation until only the feeling remains. It is in this space that I experience the greatest sense of freedom.
